Highway, Crossover, All-Terrain, Rugged or Mud: Choosing a 4x4 Tyre for UAE Driving

Walk into any tyre shop with an SUV and you will be offered letters: H/T, A/T, M/T, and increasingly X/T and R/T. They describe a ladder. At the bottom is a quiet highway tyre that never needs to leave the tarmac; at the top is a mud tyre with tread blocks you could lose a finger in. Each step up buys more bite off the road and gives up some comfort, quietness and, often, speed rating on it.
Our all-terrain versus highway tyre guide covers the two most common choices in depth, and our desert and dune driving guide covers technique and pressures in sand. This guide walks the whole ladder, using real tyres from the two brands we distribute, Laufenn and Landspider, and the tread depths their makers publish.
The ladder at a glance
- Highway terrain (H/T): Laufenn X FIT HT, Landspider Citytraxx H/T. New tread about 8.2 mm on Citytraxx H/T passenger sizes and 9.7 mm on its light-truck sizes.
- Crossover terrain (X/T): Landspider Rovertraxx X/T. New tread 9.0 mm.
- All-terrain (A/T): Landspider Wildtraxx A/T. New tread 8.5 to 12.3 mm, depending on size.
- Rugged terrain (R/T): Landspider Wildtraxx R/T. New tread 13.1 mm, three-ply sidewall.
- Mud terrain (M/T): Landspider Wildtraxx M/T. New tread about 15 mm, three-ply sidewall.
The depths are Landspider's own new-tread figures from its 2026 Middle East catalogue. Deeper tread and bigger, more open blocks grip loose ground better; on tarmac they move more under load, which tends to mean more noise, a softer steering feel and faster wear.
Highway terrain: for SUVs that live on the road
Most SUVs in the UAE spend nearly every kilometre on tarmac, and for them a highway tyre is the right answer. Laufenn says its X FIT HT is "designed for SUVs and light truck on-road conditions", aiming for "excellent handling performance and a reliable, comfortable driving experience", and lists stone ejectors and a construction designed to resist damage from stones, useful on gravel shoulders and farm tracks. Landspider describes its Citytraxx H/T as balancing comfort, quietness and handling "on highway-terrain". We carry the X FIT HT from 16 to 20 inch (see sizes) and the Citytraxx H/T from 16 to 22 inch (see sizes).
Crossover terrain: highway manners, occasional gravel
The crossover step is newer. Landspider's Rovertraxx X/T, which its Middle East catalogue labels "crossover terrain", is aimed at SUVs that want a quiet, comfortable ride but see the odd gravel track, with serrated lateral grooves and wide circumferential grooves for traction off the road; Landspider also tags it "EV Ready". We carry it in 20 and 22 inch big-SUV sizes. See the sizes.
All-terrain: the weekend all-rounder
The all-terrain tyre is the classic choice for an SUV that goes into the desert or the wadis at weekends and commutes on weekdays. Landspider says the Wildtraxx A/T is "specially designed to improve your everyday on and off adventures", with a compound designed for long tread life. The deeper, more open tread clears sand and gravel better than a highway tyre, at the cost of a little more road noise. We carry it from 15 to 20 inch, including light-truck sizes. See the sizes.
Rugged terrain: tougher sidewalls for rocky ground
Rugged terrain sits between all-terrain and mud terrain. Landspider describes the Wildtraxx R/T as a "dynamic hybrid tread design for comfortable and capable on/off-road ride", built with three body plies "to resist road hazards". A three-ply sidewall has more layers of reinforcing cord than the one or two plies typical of road tyres, which makes it harder to cut on sharp rock, the real risk in the mountain wadis of Hatta and Ras Al Khaimah. We carry it in 315/70 R17. See it here.
Mud terrain: for serious off-road use
At the top of the ladder, Landspider says the Wildtraxx M/T has an "aggressive tread blocks design for super off-road performance", self-cleaning deep grooves, three body plies and an anti-cutting compound. It is built for owners who go seriously off road and accept the trade-off on tarmac: more noise, a heavier tyre and, typically, faster wear on hard roads. See the sizes.
One important check: Landspider's catalogue lists the M/T with a Q speed symbol, which means a maximum of 160 km/h. If your car's placard calls for a higher speed symbol, a Q-rated tyre is not a like-for-like fit, and the UAE inspection checks that tyres suit the vehicle; our guide to the tyre rules and inspection explains what is checked. Always compare the speed symbol and load index with your placard before stepping up the ladder.
One SUV, four choices
Take a Toyota Land Cruiser or Nissan Patrol on 275/60 R20, one of the most common big-SUV sizes in the UAE. In that size we carry four steps of the ladder: the Laufenn X FIT HT and the Landspider Citytraxx H/T for highway driving, the Rovertraxx X/T for a quiet tyre with some gravel ability, and the Wildtraxx A/T for regular desert weekends. The right one depends only on where you really drive, not where you might one day drive.
Light truck (LT) or passenger sizes?
Several of these patterns come in both passenger and LT (light truck) sizes. LT tyres are built to carry heavier loads, usually at higher pressures, and they ride firmer as a result. They suit pickups, vehicles that tow, and SUVs that carry heavy equipment; for a family SUV the passenger size on the placard is normally the right one. Our guide to speed and load ratings explains how to compare load indexes.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use an all-terrain tyre every day?
Yes. Modern all-terrain tyres are made to be driven on the road all week. Expect a little more noise and a slightly less sharp steering feel than a highway tyre, in exchange for much better grip on sand and gravel.
Do mud tyres wear faster on tarmac?
Usually, yes. Large, widely spaced blocks move more on hard surfaces and heat up, so on a car driven mostly on the road a mud tyre tends to wear faster and be noisier than an all-terrain. Choose M/T only if you genuinely need it.
What does a three-ply sidewall mean?
It means the sidewall has three layers of reinforcing cord rather than the one or two typical of road tyres. The extra layers make it harder to cut on sharp rocks, which is why rugged and mud terrain tyres use it.
Which tyre is best for soft sand?
In soft sand, tyre pressure matters more than tread pattern: lowering the pressure lengthens the footprint so the tyre floats instead of digging. An all-terrain pattern helps, but read our desert driving guide before you air down, and reinflate before driving on the road.
Will off-road tyres increase my fuel use?
Heavier tyres with deeper, more open tread generally roll with more resistance than highway tyres, so a small increase is normal. On a car that rarely leaves the tarmac, that is one more reason to stay at the highway end of the ladder.
