Speed Ratings and Load Index: What Those Letters Really Mean

Almost every tyre we sell has a short code stamped just after the size: something like 103V, 91W or 115T. Most people scroll straight past it and pick on price and brand. That code is the part of the sidewall that tells you how much weight the tyre can carry and how much heat it can shed while it is rolling. In a country where the tarmac reaches 50C in August, that is not a detail.
The pair is called the tyre speed rating and load index. The number is the load index, the letter is the speed symbol. Together they are the tyre's service description, and they are the two figures your car's manufacturer chose deliberately when the vehicle was designed. Change them without thinking and you can end up with a tyre that is technically the right size but wrong for the car.
This is the plain-English version. What the numbers mean, what the letters mean, why the heat here changes the maths, and what to do if you have a 4x4 with a roof rack full of camping gear.
Where to find the speed rating and load index
Look at the sidewall. You will see something like 235/55 R18 100V. The first part is the size — if that section is unfamiliar, read how to read your tyre size first, it takes two minutes. The 100 is the load index. The V is the speed symbol.
Then open the driver's door and look at the placard on the door frame or door edge. It lists the size the car left the factory with, including the load index and speed symbol, plus the recommended pressures. That placard is the reference, not whatever happens to be fitted now. Cars change hands and previous owners make odd choices.
The load index, in kilograms
The load index is a code, not a weight. Each number maps to a maximum load per tyre, measured at the tyre's rated pressure. Here are the ones you will actually meet in the UAE:
- 82 = 475 kg
- 84 = 500 kg
- 87 = 545 kg
- 91 = 615 kg
- 94 = 670 kg
- 95 = 690 kg
- 97 = 730 kg
- 98 = 750 kg
- 100 = 800 kg
- 102 = 850 kg
- 104 = 900 kg
- 106 = 950 kg
- 108 = 1,000 kg
- 110 = 1,060 kg
- 112 = 1,120 kg
- 115 = 1,215 kg
- 118 = 1,320 kg
- 121 = 1,450 kg
Multiply by four and you get the theoretical capacity of the set. A 100-rated tyre gives you 3,200 kg across four corners. A Land Cruiser with a gross vehicle weight around 3,300 kg needs more than that, which is why big 4x4s run 110s, 112s and higher.
Two extra things worth knowing. Tyres marked XL or Reinforced carry a higher load index in the same size — but they only deliver it at higher inflation pressure, so you cannot fit XL tyres and keep running the old pressure numbers. And commercial tyres for vans often show two figures, like 109/107R: the first is for single fitment, the second for twin rear wheels.
Speed symbols: T, H, V, W and Y
The letter is the maximum speed the tyre is certified to sustain when correctly inflated and loaded:
- Q — 160 km/h (common on 4x4 all-terrain tyres)
- S — 180 km/h
- T — 190 km/h (many SUVs, vans and light trucks)
- H — 210 km/h (the standard family-car rating)
- V — 240 km/h
- W — 270 km/h
- Y — 300 km/h
- (Y) in brackets — above 300 km/h
You will also see ZR inside the size on performance tyres. On modern tyres ZR is a leftover marking and the real limit is the W or Y that follows it.
Why the heat matters more than the speed limit
Here is the part that gets missed. The speed rating is not really a speed limit. It is a heat rating with a speed printed on it.
A tyre is certified by running it on a test drum at increasing speeds until it reaches the rated figure, in a laboratory held at roughly room temperature. Nobody drives in a laboratory. On the E11 towards Abu Dhabi in August, the road surface can sit near 50C and the air coming off it is not much cooler. The tyre is already hot before you start. Every kilometre of high-speed running adds more heat through sidewall flex, and heat is what separates the belts from the carcass.
So a V-rated tyre on a 120 km/h road in January has an enormous margin. The same tyre, four years old, underinflated by 6 psi, carrying five adults and their luggage at 140 km/h on a July afternoon, has far less margin than the number suggests. The rating is your safety buffer, and UAE summer spends that buffer for you.
Honestly, for most drivers the jump from V to W buys nothing you will ever use in normal driving, and a shop pushing you up two speed ratings on a family saloon is selling you a softer, faster-wearing tyre. What genuinely matters is not dropping below what the car was designed for, and keeping the pressures right — which is a bigger lever than the letter. Fitting a lower rating: what actually goes wrong
A lower speed rating or load index is usually a way of saving 60 or 80 dirhams a tyre. It is a bad trade, for three reasons.
The car no longer matches its own specification
Your registration card and the door placard describe a vehicle fitted to a certain standard. Fit tyres below that standard and the car is no longer in the condition the manufacturer certified. Insurers in the UAE assess claims against the state of the vehicle. If a tyre failure contributed to an accident and the tyres were under-specified, you have handed the insurer an argument. It may not be an automatic rejection, but you do not want to be the one testing it.
The annual inspection
At the yearly test, inspectors are mainly checking tread depth, damage, and tyre age — worn or aged tyres are the common failure. But they also check that what is fitted matches what the vehicle should have. Mismatched sizes across an axle, or an obviously under-rated tyre on a heavy vehicle, can get you sent away to fix it before the registration is renewed.
The physics
Lower load index generally means a softer, less reinforced casing. On a fully loaded car in summer that casing runs hotter, flexes more and steers vaguer. You feel it as sloppy response long before it fails.
Going up is allowed. A higher load index or a faster letter than specified is fine, and sometimes sensible. Just know that a much higher load index in the same size means a stiffer sidewall and a firmer ride.
4x4s, roof racks and real loads
This is where the load index earns its keep. A Prado or Patrol at kerb weight is one thing. The same car with seven people, a full boot, a 60 kg roof rack loaded with tents, coolers and a jerry can is a different vehicle — and all that weight lands on four contact patches the size of your hand.
What to do before a long trip with a loaded roof:
- Check the gross vehicle weight on the manufacturer's VIN plate — usually on the B-pillar, the door shut or under the bonnet. The tyre placard in the door jamb generally gives only sizes and pressures. Four tyres at your load index must comfortably exceed it.
- Use the fully loaded pressure figures on the placard, not the everyday ones. Most cars list both. This is the single most effective thing you can do.
- Respect the roof rack's own limit — typically 75 to 100 kg while moving. Roof weight raises the centre of gravity and loads the outside tyres harder in a swerve.
- Check pressures cold, before you set off, not after two hours on the Dubai–Al Ain road.
- If your tyres are close to the specified minimum load index, move up a step at the next change rather than stretching them.
One note on all-terrain tyres: many carry a Q or S speed rating. That is normal and fine for their job, but it is a genuine drop from the H or T your 4x4 may have come with. If you do a lot of Sheikh Zayed Road at highway speed and only occasional sand, think about whether the trade is worth it.
Frequently asked questions
Can I fit a tyre with a higher speed rating than my car needs?
Yes. A higher speed rating is always acceptable and gives you extra heat margin. Keep all four the same, though — mixing a V on one axle and an H on the other changes how the car behaves under braking. The catch is that faster-rated tyres often use softer compounds and wear out sooner.
What happens if my load index is too low?
The tyre runs hotter than it was designed to under your car's weight, which accelerates ageing and raises the risk of a sudden failure in summer. It also gives an insurer grounds to question a claim and can be flagged at the annual inspection. Never fit below the figure on the door placard.
Does the speed rating expire as the tyre ages?
Effectively, yes. The rating applies to a sound, correctly inflated tyre. Age, heat cycling, kerb damage and repairs all reduce real capability, even though the letter stays stamped on the sidewall. A five-year-old W-rated tyre is not a W-rated tyre any more in practical terms.
Are load index and ply rating the same thing?
No. Ply rating is an older commercial-tyre measure of casing strength, shown as things like 8PR or 10PR. The load index is the modern standard and states an actual weight in kilograms per tyre. On light truck tyres you may see both, and the load index is the one to work from.
Where do I find the right rating for my car?
