Alignment vs Balancing: Which One Does Your Car Actually Need?

The steering wheel buzzed at 100 km/h on the E11 and shook hard enough by 120 that the driver lifted off. He arrived at the Sharjah branch convinced his three-week-old tyres were faulty and wanted all four swapped. Eight minutes on the balancer fixed it: one wheel was out by roughly 25 grams, about the weight of four AED 1 coins. The tyres were fine.
That confusion happens most weeks. Wheel alignment and balancing get talked about as if they were the same service, and a fair number of workshops are happy to leave it that way, because vague problems sell more work. They are two separate jobs. They fix two separate faults. And in the majority of cases only one of them is the thing actually bothering you.
So before you hand over the keys and agree to "alignment and balancing, boss" — here is how to work out which one your car needs.
The difference, one line each
Balancing is about weight. A wheel and tyre assembly is never perfectly even all the way round — the rubber, the steel belts, even the valve hole in the rim all shift the mass slightly. Spin that at 110 km/h and the heavy spot throws the wheel off centre around 900 times a minute. The machine finds the heavy spot and the technician clips or sticks small counterweights on the rim to cancel it out.
Alignment is about angles. It has nothing to do with the tyres themselves. It is the geometry of the suspension: the direction each wheel points relative to the road and to the other wheels. Adjusting it means turning tie rods and, on some cars, camber bolts or shims.
The shortcut most people can use: vibration means balancing. Pulling and odd wear means alignment. Vibration is a spinning problem, so it only appears above a certain speed and gets worse as you go faster. Alignment problems are there at 40 km/h in a car park.
Symptoms: which is which
Signs you need balancing
- Steering wheel shakes or buzzes in a narrow speed band — very often between 90 and 120 km/h — and smooths out again if you go faster or slower.
- The vibration is felt mostly through the steering wheel (front wheels) or through the seat and floor (rear wheels).
- It appeared straight after new tyres were fitted, or after a wheel was taken off for any reason.
- A wheel weight has fallen off. Look at the rim edge for a clean, unweathered patch where one used to sit — common after a kerb scrape or a rough wash.
- Tyres have small scalloped dips around the tread edge, like the rubber has been scooped out at intervals.
Signs you need alignment
- The car drifts to one side when you loosen your grip on a flat, straight road.
- The steering wheel sits crooked when the car is going straight — the badge points off to two o'clock.
- The inside or outside shoulder of a tyre is worn far more than the rest of the tread. This is the giveaway. It is also expensive, because it kills a tyre in half its normal life.
- The tread on one edge feels sharp and feathered if you run your palm sideways across it.
- The steering doesn't return to centre by itself after a turn.
- You hit a bad pothole, a kerb or a concrete block and the car has felt slightly different since.
Now the nuance, because a shop won't usually volunteer it. A very slight pull to the left is often just road camber — UAE roads are crowned so water runs off, and a car will follow that slope. Test it properly: drive the same stretch in both directions. If the car pulls left going one way and right coming back, it is the road, not your alignment. If it pulls the same direction both ways, it's the car. Honestly, for a lot of drivers a small pull matters less than the tyre wear does, but the wear is the part that costs you money.
Camber, caster and toe, without the diagram
These are the three angles on the printout the technician hands you. In plain terms:
Camber
How far the top of the wheel leans in or out when you look at the car from the front. Too much lean and the tyre rides on one shoulder, so that shoulder wears out while the rest of the tread is still good.
Caster
The forward or backward tilt of the steering axis, viewed from the side — the same idea as the angled forks on a bicycle. It is what makes the steering wheel self-centre after a corner and gives the car stability at 120 km/h.
Toe
Whether the wheels point slightly towards each other or away from each other, seen from above, like standing pigeon-toed. Toe is the one that goes wrong most often and the one that destroys tyres fastest, because a wheel that isn't pointing straight is being dragged sideways every metre you drive.
Toe is also the easiest to adjust, which is why a basic alignment on many cars is quick. Camber and caster on a lot of ordinary saloons and SUVs aren't adjustable at all from the factory — if those are out, something is bent or a bush has collapsed, and no amount of alignment will fix it. A good workshop will tell you that instead of charging you for an alignment that won't hold.
What UAE roads do to your alignment
Alignment doesn't drift on its own. Something knocks it out. In this country there is no shortage of candidates.
Speed bumps are the main one. Not the gentle ones — the tall, sharp humps in older residential areas and industrial estates, taken at 30 km/h instead of 15 because you didn't see it in the glare. That impact goes straight through the tyre into the suspension arms.
Then there are kerbs. Parking in Industrial Area 8, Al Qusais or anywhere around the older souks means nudging kerbs that are higher and squarer than they look, often with sand hiding the base. A firm kerb strike at parking speed is enough to shift toe.
Construction access roads deserve their own mention. Wherever a new tower or interchange is going up, the diversion road is compacted sand and broken asphalt with edges that drop 5 cm without warning. Drive one of those daily on the school run and you will be back for alignment sooner than the manual suggests. Rain adds to it — the UAE gets few wet days, but water finds every weak patch and the potholes that appear afterwards are sudden and deep.
How often, and what it honestly costs
Our rule at the branch is simple:
- Balance every tyre, every time it goes on a rim. No exceptions. A new tyre is never balanced from the factory.
- Check alignment whenever you fit new tyres. If the old ones wore unevenly, alignment is why, and fitting fresh rubber to a misaligned car just feeds the next set into the same problem.
- Get it checked after any decent impact — a real pothole, a kerb strike, a hard speed bump. Don't wait for the six-month mark.
- Otherwise, roughly once a year, or every 15,000 to 20,000 km. Sooner if you regularly use construction diversions or you've been off-road.
On price, and being straight about it: balancing in the UAE typically runs somewhere around AED 10 to 25 per wheel as a standalone job, and a four-wheel alignment usually lands between AED 60 and AED 150 depending on the car and the workshop's equipment. Larger 4x4s and anything needing shims or adjustable bolts costs more. Anyone quoting you far above that range for a standard saloon is charging for the address, not the work. Anyone quoting far below it may only be doing the front toe and calling it an alignment.

Frequently asked questions
Can bad alignment cause vibration?
Rarely, and not the smooth high-speed buzz people describe. Severe toe misalignment can produce a shimmy, but by that stage you would also see obvious feathered wear on the tread edge. If the car is smooth at 60 km/h and shakes at 110, look at balancing first. It is the cheaper test and it solves the problem most of the time.
Do I need alignment every time I change tyres?
You need it checked, not automatically adjusted. A check takes minutes on the rack and tells you whether the angles are within factory spec. If they are, you have paid for information and saved a new set of tyres from wearing badly. If they are out, better to know now than after 8,000 km of one-sided wear.
Why did my car pull to one side straight after new tyres?
Usually tyre conicity or a rotation issue rather than alignment. New tyres occasionally have a slight internal pull, and swapping the two front tyres side to side often cancels it out. Come back to the shop that fitted them — this is a five-minute fix and should not cost you anything.
Do alignment and balancing improve fuel economy?
Alignment can, slightly. A wheel dragging sideways adds rolling resistance, so correcting bad toe removes a small ongoing fuel penalty. My tyres are worn on one edge. Is alignment enough?
